A new study in the United Kingdom has revealed that nearly one in three children no longer spend time playing outdoors after school.

The research highlights a growing trend of reduced outdoor activity among children, attributing the decline to increased screen time, parental safety concerns, and limited access to safe play areas.

Experts warn that the drop in outdoor play could have long-term effects on children’s physical health, social development, and emotional wellbeing. They stress that unstructured outdoor play is vital for creativity, physical fitness, and building social skills.

Dr. Emma Thompson, one of the lead researchers, urged parents, schools, and communities to prioritize outdoor activities. “Play is not just a luxury—it is fundamental to healthy child development. We must create environments where children can safely enjoy the outdoors,” she said.

Campaigners are now calling for more investment in public parks and community spaces to ensure children have opportunities to engage in physical activities after school.
