The Kremlin has downplayed prospects of direct talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, even as former U.S. President Donald Trump suggested that Russian leader Vladimir Putin may not be willing to strike a deal to end the ongoing war.

Speaking in Moscow, Kremlin officials reiterated their position that negotiations must be based on what they described as “new realities on the ground,” including Russia’s territorial claims, a stance Kyiv has consistently rejected.

Trump, who has repeatedly vowed he could broker peace between Russia and Ukraine if re-elected, warned in recent remarks that Putin may be reluctant to negotiate, casting doubt on the feasibility of a swift settlement.

The comments come amid growing international concern that the conflict, now well into its third year, shows little sign of resolution, with both sides entrenched in their demands.

Western allies continue to press Moscow to respect Ukraine’s sovereignty, while Russia insists on security guarantees and recognition of its annexations, leaving the path to meaningful peace talks uncertain.
