British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has strongly condemned Israel’s reported plan to take full control of Gaza City, warning that such a move would worsen the humanitarian crisis in the war-torn territory.
Speaking at a press briefing in London, Starmer said the UK “cannot support actions that escalate tensions or undermine prospects for peace” and reiterated his call for an immediate ceasefire and the protection of civilians.
His comments come after Israeli officials signalled their intention to tighten military control over key parts of Gaza, including its largest urban centre, as part of ongoing operations against Hamas. The plan has drawn criticism from humanitarian organisations and foreign governments concerned about further displacement of civilians.
“The people of Gaza have already endured unimaginable suffering. Any plan that deepens their plight is unacceptable,” Starmer stated.
Downing Street confirmed that the UK is in active diplomatic talks with allies, including the United States and European Union partners, to press for restraint and renewed negotiations towards a two-state solution.
The Israeli government has not formally responded to Starmer’s remarks, but defence officials have insisted their operations are aimed at eliminating security threats.
