Two teenagers have been formally charged with the murder of a 38-year-old man in Barry, South Wales, following a fatal stabbing that has shocked the local community.

South Wales Police confirmed that the suspects—aged 16 and 17—were arrested in connection with the death of a man identified as Darren Hughes, a father-of-one, who was found with serious stab wounds in the early hours of Monday morning. He was pronounced dead at the scene despite emergency responders’ efforts.

Court Appearance

The teenagers appeared before Cardiff Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, where they were charged with murder and remanded into custody. Due to their age, their identities have not been made public.

A spokesperson for South Wales Police said investigations are ongoing and that officers are continuing to appeal for witnesses or anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage from the area.

“This was a brutal and senseless act that has devastated a family and shaken the local community,” said Detective Chief Inspector Laura Simmons, who is leading the investigation. “We are doing everything possible to ensure justice is served.”

Community in Mourning

Tributes have poured in for Hughes, who was described by family and friends as a “devoted father” and “gentle soul.” A memorial of flowers and messages has grown outside the street where the incident occurred.

“He was a kind, hardworking man who adored his young son,” said a family statement. “We are heartbroken and ask for privacy as we grieve this unimaginable loss.”

Appeal for Information

Police continue to urge anyone who may have seen suspicious activity in the Barry area around the time of the incident to come forward.

The suspects are due to appear at Cardiff Crown Court later this week.
