Britain must take urgent steps to strengthen its domestic defences and prepare for the possibility of war on its own soil, according to a stark new government security review released today.

The strategic assessment, commissioned by the Cabinet Office, warns that geopolitical tensions, cyber warfare, and hybrid threats have significantly increased the risk of conflict directly impacting the UK. The report calls for a comprehensive plan to safeguard critical infrastructure, improve civil resilience, and enhance public readiness for potential attacks.

“This is no longer a distant threat,” the review states. “The UK must actively prepare to protect its population and territory in the event of hostilities.”

Among the recommendations are expanded investment in air and missile defence systems, greater stockpiles of essential supplies, and increased support for emergency services. The review also highlights the importance of public education campaigns to strengthen national resilience.

Defence Secretary [Name] said the government was taking the findings “extremely seriously” and pledged that updated defence measures would be presented to Parliament later this year.

Opposition parties have called for transparency on spending plans and assurances that civil liberties will be protected as preparedness efforts intensify.

Analysts say the review reflects growing concern over the increasingly unpredictable global security environment, including tensions with Russia and instability in the Indo-Pacific.
