The British High Commission in Nigeria has debunked widespread rumours circulating on social media that the United Kingdom has imposed new visa restrictions specifically targeting Nigerian nationals.

In an official statement released on Wednesday, the Commission clarified that the UK’s immigration policies remain unchanged and emphasized that no new visa restrictions have been introduced for Nigerians.

“We keep our immigration system under constant review to allow legal migration and legitimate travel, while deterring those who may seek to abuse it,” the statement read.

This clarification comes amid increasing online speculation that the UK government was tightening its entry requirements for Nigerian citizens, leading to public concern and confusion.

The High Commission reaffirmed the longstanding and robust relationship between the UK and Nigeria, particularly in areas involving people-to-people connections, education, business, and migration cooperation.

“Our UK and Nigeria people-to-people links are strong and enduring, and we continue to work closely with the Government of Nigeria to tackle irregular migration,” the Commission added.

Officials urged the public to rely on verified sources of information and avoid sharing or acting upon unconfirmed reports. The High Commission also advised those with inquiries to contact its Press and Public Affairs team directly for accurate updates.

This statement is part of ongoing efforts by the British government to maintain transparency and foster trust in its immigration processes while strengthening bilateral ties with Nigeria.
