Reform UK has announced a 10-point plan to rejuvenate Britain’s struggling high streets, aiming to transform them from desolate zones into bustling community hubs.
The plan addresses the growing crisis as major retailers, banks, and building societies continue to abandon town centres, leaving behind empty storefronts and rising crime rates.
Call for Immediate Action
MP Rupert Lowe is pushing for urgent intervention, blaming years of neglect by councils and policymakers.
“We need to break the cycle of inaction. Our high streets must become places where families feel safe and businesses thrive again,” Lowe said.
Key Proposals
- Free Parking Zones: Introduce time-limited free parking to attract shoppers, removing high parking fees that drive consumers to out-of-town retail parks.
- Street Cleanups: Deploy more bins and street cleaners to improve the environment.
- Increased Police Presence: Enhance policing to restore a sense of safety, especially for women and families.
Community Pride
Lowe emphasized the importance of restoring pride in local areas:
“We should take some pride in our towns — cleaner streets and safer spaces will naturally bring people back.”
As hundreds of high streets across the UK resemble ghost towns, Reform UK’s plan aims to turn the tide and revive local economies.
