The UK government and the car industry are at odds over ambitious electric vehicle (EV) sales targets, which manufacturers argue are too high given current consumer demand. The government plans to consult on the targets but insists on a 2030 deadline to phase out new petrol and diesel car sales. Stellantis, the owner of Vauxhall, recently announced it would close its Luton plant, putting 1,100 jobs at risk, partly due to these EV rules. Industry groups warn that weak EV demand and stringent quotas could harm business viability and jobs, while companies like Ford urge for government-backed incentives to boost EV sales. Despite the concerns, the government remains firm on its 2030 goal and is seeking industry consensus on how to make the targets more achievable.
