Edinburgh, Scotland – A man has tragically died after being struck by a bus in Edinburgh city centre on Saturday night. Michael Leneghan, 74, was fatally injured in the Cowgate area, a popular street lined with late-night bars and nightclubs, which was packed with revelers at the time.
Emergency services quickly responded to the scene, but Mr. Leneghan succumbed to his injuries. Police Scotland established a large cordon around the area, including the South Bridge, to shield the public from the incident and preserve the scene for investigation. The Cowgate was closed for several hours following the crash, disrupting local businesses and nightlife.
Sgt. Paul Ewing, from the Edinburgh road policing unit, expressed condolences, saying: “Our thoughts remain with Michael’s family and friends, as well as everyone affected by this tragic incident.” Police have been gathering witness statements and reviewing CCTV footage to understand the circumstances surrounding the collision.
Despite police requests for privacy and respect for the family, images and videos from the scene circulated widely on social media. Police have urged the public to refrain from sharing these materials.
In a statement, Mr. Leneghan’s family thanked the emergency services and the public for their support, adding: “We would now ask for privacy at this time.”
The investigation is ongoing as police continue to gather information to piece together the events leading up to the fatal crash.
