Ferry companies and business organizations in the Channel Islands are urging for an “immediate” decision regarding the company that will operate ferry services starting in March. Brittany Ferries, Condor Ferries, the Jersey Chamber of Commerce, and the Jersey Hospitality Association (JHA) have collectively expressed concern that the ongoing delay in awarding the contract is harming tourism.

Christophe Mathieu, CEO of Brittany Ferries and Condor Ferries, warned that without timely decisions, tourists may choose to “go elsewhere.” Condor Ferries’ current contracts with Jersey and Guernsey expire on March 27, 2025, with the winning bidder expected to manage the services for the next 15 years.

Bidding Process Delayed

The bidding process, which began in May, is reportedly nearly a month behind schedule. Initially, bidders were informed that the contract would be awarded by the end of September. As of now, the contenders include Condor Ferries, Danish shipping company DFDS, and Irish Ferries.

Mathieu highlighted the uncertainty caused by the delays, stating that there have been no bookings for Channel Islands services in 2025 due to the indecision surrounding the tender process. He noted, “Those considering a holiday in these beautiful destinations will simply go elsewhere.”

Concerns from Local Businesses

Marcus Calvani from the JHA echoed these concerns, emphasizing the need for confidence within the hospitality sector, which is already facing challenging trading conditions. “It’s extremely hard to focus on growth when we have such uncertainty with our transportation links,” he said. Many JHA members have reported a decline in bookings, raising alarms about their future.

The Guernsey Chamber of Commerce acknowledged that significant decisions require time but stressed that the overdue resolution is negatively impacting local businesses. “A timely resolution is crucial, as local businesses need clarity to make informed plans and investments for the upcoming year,” they stated.

Business groups are urging all relevant parties to prioritize this matter, ensuring that the local economy can move forward with confidence and stability.
