The body of American mountaineer William Stampfl, who disappeared 22 years ago on Huascaran mountain in Peru, has been discovered.
Stampfl was reported missing in June 2002 after being buried by an avalanche. Despite search and rescue efforts at the time, his body remained unfound for more than two decades, preserved in the ice.
The discovery was made amid rising temperatures caused by global warming, which led to the melting of ice on the mountain. Police identified Stampfl through his well-preserved clothing, harness, boots, and personal possessions.
Huascaran, standing at over 6,700 meters (22,000 feet), is part of the Cordillera Blanca range of the Andes and is a popular yet perilous destination for climbers from around the world.
