Borussia Dortmund Part Ways with Manager Edin Terzic at His Request

Borussia Dortmund have announced the departure of their manager Edin Terzic, who requested the termination of his contract “with immediate effect.” The decision comes after Dortmund’s impressive run to the Champions League final in the 2023-24 season, where they were narrowly defeated by Real Madrid at Wembley.

The club confirmed that they agreed to Terzic’s request following “a joint discussion.”

“After the game at Wembley, I asked for a meeting with the club’s senior management team, because after nine years at BVB – including six on the coaching staff and two and a half as head coach – I feel that the club’s new era should begin with a new man on the touchline,” said the 41-year-old Terzic.

“Everyone close to me knows that this has been a very difficult decision for me to take over the last few weeks, but after intensive discussions my fundamental feeling has not changed. I wish Borussia Dortmund the very best, thank you and see you soon.”

Terzic’s coaching journey began with Dortmund’s academy between 2010 and 2013. He later became an assistant to Slaven Bilic at Turkish club Besiktas, and followed Bilic to Premier League side West Ham in 2015. After Bilic’s sacking in November 2017, Terzic returned to Dortmund as Lucien Favre’s assistant in 2018.

Following Favre’s dismissal in December 2020, Terzic was appointed interim manager and led the team to a German Cup final victory over RB Leipzig. He then served as the club’s technical director before being named head coach in 2022.

Under Terzic’s leadership, Dortmund finished runners-up in the Bundesliga last season, narrowly missing out on the title on the final day. In the 2023-24 season, the team secured a fifth-place finish, ensuring qualification for the next season’s Champions League.

“Edin Terzic has done an outstanding job in his time at BVB, and we all owe him a huge debt of gratitude,” said Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke. “Edin and I will always remain friends.”

Terzic’s departure marks the end of a significant chapter for Borussia Dortmund, as the club prepares to embark on a new era with a new manager at the helm.
