Interview with DJ Cormac: Navigating Berlin’s LGBTQ+ Spaces
Interviewer: DJ Cormac, thank you for taking the time to chat with us today. Let’s start with your journey to Berlin. What drew you to the city’s queer dance music scene?
DJ Cormac: It’s a pleasure to be here. Well, Berlin has always had this magnetic pull for artists and musicians, especially those within the LGBTQ+ community. Its reputation for embracing alternative cultures and its vibrant nightlife scene were big draws for me. Plus, Berlin has a rich history of queer culture dating back to the 1920s and 1930s, which has always fascinated me.
Interviewer: You’ve been a fixture in Berlin’s LGBTQ+ nightclub scene for over two decades. How would you describe the evolution of queer spaces in the city during that time?
DJ Cormac: It’s been quite a journey. When I first arrived in Berlin, the scene was already thriving, but it has certainly evolved over the years. There’s been a shift towards more inclusive and diverse spaces, which is wonderful to see. While the partying aspect is still a big part of it, there’s also been a growing emphasis on creating quieter, community-focused spaces where LGBTQ+ individuals can connect and express themselves in different ways.
Interviewer: Could you share some of your favorite LGBTQ+ spaces in Berlin?
DJ Cormac: Absolutely. One of my top picks would be AKA Berlin. It’s not your typical nightclub; it’s actually an art gallery with a tattoo and piercing studio. The atmosphere there is incredibly welcoming, and it’s a fantastic place to explore body art while connecting with the community. Another favorite of mine is SchwuZ, a legendary queer club known for its diverse lineup of events and performances. And of course, no list would be complete without mentioning Berghain, which has become an iconic symbol of Berlin’s nightlife and LGBTQ+ culture.
Interviewer: What do you think sets Berlin apart as a hub for LGBTQ+ communities within Europe?
DJ Cormac: I think it’s a combination of factors. Firstly, there’s a long history of queer culture in Berlin, which has laid the foundation for a welcoming and inclusive environment. Secondly, the city’s progressive attitude towards LGBTQ+ rights and issues has created a sense of safety and acceptance for individuals from all walks of life. And finally, Berlin’s creative energy and vibrant nightlife scene provide a platform for LGBTQ+ individuals to express themselves freely and authentically.
Interviewer: Thank you, DJ Cormac, for sharing your insights and recommendations. It’s been a pleasure speaking with you.
DJ Cormac: Likewise. Thank you for the opportunity to shine a light on Berlin’s incredible LGBTQ+ spaces.
